OMENA – Edward Elmer Woessner, 85, of Omena, passed away peacefully in his sleep in Traverse City early Saturday morning, August 13, 2022.

Ed was born in Bowling Green, Ohio, on February 12, 1937, to Martin Lewis and Clara Belle (Ross) Woessner. He had two siblings, Virginia Woessner Scharf and Jack Lewis Woessner (deceased).

His first job was delivering the Daily Sentinel Tribune on his bicycle at age 10. He developed a large customer base, knowing each customer on his route very well. Later he worked in the mail room of the Tribune until he graduated from Bowling Green High School in 1955.

After high school, Ed enrolled at Toledo University in the Engineering College, majoring in Mechanical Engineering, graduating in 1960. On June 6, 1959, he married Mary Elizabeth Reid, from Perrysburg, Ohio.

The U.S. Army drafted him in 1960, and he was assigned for 2 years in the Scientists and Engineers program. After his discharge from the Army, he worked in Civil Service for the U.S. Army, Department of Defense at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.

Ed and Mary first lived in Maryland and had two children, Mark and Suzanne. They moved to Michigan in 1966, and Ed worked at the Tank and Automotive Command in Warren, Michigan. They had two more children, David and Laura, and lived in Oakland Township, Rochester, Michigan.

Ed retired in 1993, and at that time, he was Director of Systems Engineering. They later built a house and moved to Leelanau Township, Omena, in 2003.

Ed and Mary are members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Suttons Bay. Ed had been active in the Birmingham Power Squadron, and later in the Grand Traverse Power and Sail Squadron. He inspected vessels in the various marinas in the area. Ed earned the designation “Senior Navigator” and was voted “Master Mariner” in the Birmingham Power Squadron.

Ed’s hobbies included woodworking, boating as well as playing Euchre and Poker.
