State Sen. Michelle McManus (R-Lake Leelanau) has canceled her subscription to the Leelanau Enterprise.

The newspaper staff received that word last week from Nikki Bouck, purchasing agent for the Michigan Senate, who sent an email saying that “because of the current State of Michigan budget situation, the Senator does not wish to pay for the subscription at this time.”

McManus’s chief of staff, Veronica LaDuke, explained that the senator is trying to cut at least 14-percent from office budgets.

“We’ve eliminated all newspaper subscriptions and district mailings, drastically cut back on the publications we stock in the office and even cut caller ID and voicemail from most of the office phones,” LaDuke said.

Nonetheless, La Duke said, McManus wanted the newspaper staff to know “that she’ll still be reading the paper every (week) at her parents’ house up the road.”
