The “second season” in girls’ basketball starts Monday with county teams playing in the Class C and D District tournaments.

The Class C District at Kalkaska field includes both Glen Lake and Suttons Bay. The Norsemen will play the host team, the undefeated Blue Blazers, on Monday at 7:30 p.m. Suttons Bay is 7-12 overall and wraps up regular season play tonight by hosting Buckley.

Senior Olivia Raftshol is leading the team in scoring at 18.1 points a game, while fellow senior Emily Send is averaging 9.9 rebounds a game.

Should the Bay beat Kalkaska, the Norse will face intra-county rival Glen Lake on Wednesday, March 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Kalkaska. The Lakers dominated both times the two teams played this season, beating the Norse 74-53 on Jan. 8 and 75-41 on Feb. 11.

Glen Lake coach Jason Bradford said while there are no sure things in District play, he is preparing his team to face a very tough Kalkaska team that beat Glen Lake 67-50 on Dec. 22.

“We were down big to them at halftime in that game, but were able to pull within six points with about three minutes to go in the fourth. Kalkaska is a very tough team and will be even tougher on their home court during the playoffs,” Bradford said.

The winner of the March 3 semifinal will go on to play in the District championship on March 6 at 7 p.m. in Kalkaska.

The Class D District is hosted by St. Mary this year, with the Eagles taking on Leland at 7 p.m. on Monday. The winner will face Traverse City Christian on March 3 at 6 p.m., with Northport playing Grand Traverse Academy at 7:30 p.m. in the nightcap. The District championship game is March 6 at 7 p.m. in the St. Mary gym.

The Eagles will be looking to extend its District championship winning streak to three, but have to get by a Leland squad that has not seen a lot of success this season. St. Mary coach Paula Korson said records are deceiving and she sees a young Comet squad that can be dangerous.

“They are our rivals. I know my players are not looking past Leland right now because they see the potential on that team,” Korson said.

If St. Mary wins Monday, it will play T-C Christian for the fourth time this season. The two teams tied for the Cherryland Conference championship with 5-1 records, but St. Mary had the better overall mark at 14-3.

“We know what they can do and they know what we can do, so we are pretty evenly matched,” Korson said.

Northport wraps up the regular season tonight at Alba. The Wildcats are 9-10 overall and finished third in the Cherryland at 2-3. It’s two conference wins came against the team they will be playing on March 3, G-T Academy. Coach Casey Wilcox said how Northport does in the District is entirely up to her players.

“If the team that beat G-T Academy by 20 points last week shows up next week, we could be a really dangerous team. There are no ‘gimmes’ in District play so we can’t look past the Mustangs,” she said.

Assuming St. Mary makes it out of its side of the District bracket and Northport beats G-T Academy, the Eagles and Wildcats will square off for the third time this season March 6 in the District final. St. Mary won both times the two teams played this season. St. Mary beat Northport on Feb. 4, 71-46.
