It is common knowledge that it is necessary for Suttons Bay Schools to further shave their budget. However, the question of whether BATA is really the best way to get our children to and from school should be asked. Here are some basic points to consider:
• BATA drivers will not be able to use yellow caution or red stop lights.
• BATA drivers cannot stop at every current bus stop.
• BATA drivers must have a valid CDL B license with an A and P endorsement, but do not have a S endorsement. (You are not required to have the S endorsement if you drive a coach bus and you do not transport students between the home and the school or the school and the home.)
• BATA drivers can pick up passengers other than school students.
• BATA drivers are not fingerprinted while having their backgrounds checked.
• BATA drivers may be unaware if no one is home to greet young students.
• School bus drivers have to use yellow cautions and red stop lights.
• School bus drivers can stop at every current bus stop.
• School bus drivers possess a valid CDL B license with an A and P endorsement, and the S endorsement. (A P endorsement can be issued without an S if the driver is not driving students for a school district.)
• School bus drivers cannot pick up passengers other than school students.
• School bus drivers verify that someone is home before leaving a student off.
• School bus drivers are fingerprinted and receive a comprehensive background check.
• For the last eight years I have driven bus for the Suttons Bay School district. In that time I have had the same bus route. I feel I know the children on my route well and feel committed to insuring their safety. At this time I do not feel that using Bay Area Transportation Authority is the best way to insure their safety.
I urge parents to attend the next board meeting and ask for themselves if this is in the best interest of their children.
