Members of the Suttons Bay Bingham Fire and Rescue are offering a bonfire, a place to get out of the cold and a chance to catch a mess of fish as a way to encourage young people into ice fishing.
“I’m just trying to promote parents getting their children out and trying the sport,” said Doug Goodrich. He and other fire and rescue department members are sponsoring the event on the ice of Lake Leelanau at the end of Popp Rd. A full day of activity is planned for Saturday, Feb. 13.
GREG ALSIP holds a 27-inch, 8-pound walleye that he caught while fishing in north Lake Leelanau last Wednesday night, Jan. 27.
The day coincides with “free fishing weekend,” a time when the state Department of Natural Resources waives the requirement for a fishing license.
The volunteers are hoping to attract families out on the ice. Other activities will include ice skating and horseshoes. Prizes will be provided to participants.
Sponsoring businesses include the Fish Hooked, Radio Shack, La Naro Pub, Village Inn, North Country Grill and Plantmasters.
Everyone from seasoned pros to young amateurs are invited, Goodrich said. Help will be provided to those new to sport, and a limited amount of polls will be available. Free bait will be provided.
Fishing contests will be held for children and adults.
For more information, Goodrich may be contacted at 231-499-6118 or 271-0009. His email address is ddgoodrich65@hotmail.com.
