Guided snowshoe hikes will be resuming at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
Park officials said a special holiday hike will be offered Wednesday, Dec. 30, and that regular hikes will be held every Saturday and Sunday, beginning Jan. 2, through February or later if good snow conditions permit.
Each hike begins with participants gathering at 1 p.m. at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire. Those who don’t have snowshoes can reserve and borrow a pair from the park at no charge.
A park ranger will provide basic snowshoeing instructions and then lead participants in their own vehicles to a trailhead. During the hike, the ranger will identify flora and fauna and provide information on the Lakeshore’s features.
Participants are advised to wear waterproof boots and dress in layers. Each program should conclude at the trailhead by 3 p.m. Park officials said the hikes are “mildly strenuous,” and proceed at a leisurely pace for only .5 to 1.5 miles. Rangers will select a different location for each hike.
While the walk and snowshoe loan are free, participants must buy a park entrance pass or display an annual pass in their vehicle. Park passes are $10 per vehicle and good for seven days. An annual pass is $20 and is valid for one year from the month of purchase.
Reservations are not required, but are suggested. Teachers and other group leaders can also schedule a ranger-guided hike during the winter.
