Over the latest two-week reporting period, a respectable 14 new building permits were added to a file available for public review at the Leelanau County Construction Code Authority office.

Last year during the same period, only 10 new permits were added. The 14 new permits this year represent projects having a combined estimated construction value of $1,077,114, also slightly higher than the figure reported during the same period last year.

The new permits brought the year-to-date total number of permits issued to 382 and the estimated total construction value total for this year so far to $37,513,215.

Although the number of permits issued so far this year is about two percent higher than the same period last year, the total number of permits issued is down some 30 percent from 2007 and 54 percent from 2006.

And although the latest two-week permit numbers and value totals are “respectable” for this time of year compared to 2008, the year-to-date total value is down more than four-percent from the same time in 2008. In fact, this year’s construction value totals are down 23 percent from 2007, and down 48 percent from 2006 levels.
