Whenever there's trouble, the public can count on them to be there to help.

So, what goes into being a volunteer fireman and how can one get involved?

The answer to that and other questions will be available at what’s believed to be the first-of-its-kind event Saturday in Lake Leelanau.

The Leland Fire Department has organized a “recruitment day” for Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the VFW Hall.

“To my knowledge, this is the first time the departments have been so proactive in helping the public learn more about how to become involved,” said Mike Fandel, chief of Leland Township Fire and Rescue.

Fandel said the event was open to all departments in the county, will include participants from Cedar’s Solon-Centerville Township Department, Leland/Lake Leelanau, Northport and Suttons Bay/Bingham.

“Even when I started out, I learned about the department through a roommate,” Fandel said. “Each department has different requirements (for volunteers). We’ll have equipment and people there to answer questions and let you know how you can get involved.”
